Don?t use unauthorized Xbox 360 Storage Devices - Xbox Live's Major Nelson (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you?ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to ?back it up,? you?d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

An upcoming update for Microsoft's Xbox 360 will prevent "unauthorized" memory units from working with the console, according to a post late yesterday by Xbox Live's Larry Hryb, a.k.a. Major Nelson.

The announcement has sparked new complaints from gamers about the price of Microsoft's official memory devices. A 512MB memory unit from Microsoft goes for $29.99, for example, while a 2GB model from third-party vendor Datel sells for $39.99.

A Microsoft spokesman confirmed this morning via email that this particular move is targeted at memory units that plug into the front of the console, not unauthorized hard drives.

In the comments on Major Nelson's post, there's some confusion over whether any of the memory units from third-party vendors are authorized. We've asked the company for clarification of that issue, and we'll update this post when we hear back.
