A friend of mine has had a chipped wii from off ebay a good while now but some of the newer games are not playing, she is unable to get in contact with the person she got it from to ask about it.

Q's can we find out what chip is in it without opening it ie program etc

Q's can it be updated if we found what chip it is

Q's can it be removed and softmoded

im not 100% sure about the chipped 1s as i have never really dealt with them other than softy wofty moddys

Mine's got a yaosm-flashed chip in and I softmodded it at the weekend. After a bit of research, the 2 can live quite happily together. The newer backups, like Grand Slam Tennis boot fine on the softmod backup loader but not the normal way.

The softmod does give you access to other things, like the homebrew channel.

I assume you haven't got version 4 firmware or the new games would probably work. If that's the case, the softmod will be a doddle.

As far as I know, there's no way to work out what chip you have without opening it up. Even then it could be a basic EEPROM flashed with any number of hexes and you'd be none the wiser.

you can try installing homebrew and then update the cios goto to wiibrew on net for details
