View Full Version : Chip V/s Soft-mod?

Been reading around a bit on modding the Wii, but its raised a lot of questions in my mind, albeit given me a lot of information. However, I ask perhaps one of the most burning questions in people's minds when they embark on the modding jouney...

Which is better: chipping the Wii or soft-modding it?

From what I've understood so far, I attempt to consolidate the info; please feel free to correct me.

Common aspects of both mods
- WiiConnect24 needs to be turned off
- No updates should be done once modded
- Loads of benefits : play backups, etc...

Some chip benefits
- Completely reversible (take the chip out, you're back to square one)

Some soft-mod benefits
- No need to open the Wii, thereby rendering the warranty void
- WiiBrew channel & related appps
- Believe you can be on any version up till 4.0, but not beyond
- If there are upgrades, there will probably be a way to get to the upgrade somehow
- FREE !!

Resultant Questions
- Does rolling back to an earlier version of firmware (say 3.4u) set the Wii to Factory Settings?
- Is the chip better in performance than the soft-mod?
- If the chip offers quicker/better performance, is it enough to offset the other obvious benefits of a soft-mod?
- Is the WiiBrew channel accessible on a chipped Wii?
- Which is the best version firmware to be on for each mod?

:) I don't ask for much, do I?

Think the softmod and chip are basically the same and tbh i prefer softmod because some modchips that have come out have lost all support(firmware upgrades etc).

Performance about the same.

Got wiibrew on mine ;).

Cant say about which firmware as modchip and softmod are different, all i can say is my softmod works flawlessly with all backups as long as you have correct discs and you regionfrii and brickblocker to take the intial updates out of the games.

I've got a chip in mine with yaosm on it (probably not latest) and have had no real problems. I've just done my first softmod on a 3.3E Wii and that went fine as well.

My backups for the yaosm Wii don't, on the whole, work on the softmodded Wii. Only one of them did. The softmod zip comes with a patcher. I tried that & the burnt disc worked fine in the softmod Wii but wouldn't boot in the yaosm one. Strange stuff. I use + discs for my yaosm and the softmod guide says to use - discs. Could just be that they need the book type setting.

One of the latest backups, Grand Slam Tennis, won't boot on either. The disc is recognised but boots to a black screen. Seems it needs files that come with a newer firmware update. After a bit of reading, you can update the IOS files to fix this. This looks an easy job on the softmod using the additional channels, but I've no idea yet how to do it on the yaosm system.

Hi I had my Wii soft modded when it first came out and it played most games ok, some of the games with hi graphics were sometimes a little choppy ie the intro on Samba D Amigo, James Bond etc but my big concern was one day loading the wrong game or taking an update and totally fuc**ng up the kids console.
So after a bit research I got a D2Pro modchip installed and I can honestly say it was the best money I have spent for a while cause now I can download all the kids games without worrying about what region it came from, I install all the updates the games need without worrying ie virtua tennis, tiger woods 10 etc to use the new motion sensor, every game I have tried has played as good as the origional, you play them the same as origionals as the game icon appears on the screen so no farting about with backup loaders etc, it has a built in brick blocker and is fully upgradeable.
Ps
Here is the spec from the D2Pro website if anyone is interested
Compatible with DMS, D2A, D2B, D2C, D2C-2 and D2E* chipsets
Compatible with all regions, USA, JAP and PAL
Compatible with D2B "cut pin" drives (does not require the cut pins to be connected)
Fully configurable and updatable via DVD
Advanced automatic region detection with fallback (works even if a drive is changed to a different region Wii)
Region override for Wii and Gamecube games
Direct Boot of Wii original, import, and backup games
Direct Boot of Gamecube original, import, and backup games
Direct boot of homebrew in GC mode
Supports multi-disc games, DVD-R, +R, +RW (no bitsetting required)
Supports Dual Layer
Supports factory made 'silvers', even with incorrect header data
Supports, SMG, SSBB, Mario Kart and other 'problem' titles
Streaming audio-fix for Gamecube games
Diskspeed configurable via DVD, with separate settings for different media types
Recovery mode makes it impossible to brick the chip with a bad flash
Onboard JTAG interface for in-system updates of FPGA core if necessary**
8Mbit onboard flash for storing data and applications
Rock solid performance with 1.5V FPGA core and high quality components
Onboard status LEDs

I got a wii in December, got it chipped for fifty quid, and every game D/L has worked perfectly including updates etc. the only thing I have had a problem with is american games, not all of them start. sometimes the picture comes up at the start and the wii just freezes up!

TBH I have never tried American games yet but if I couldn`t find the pal version I wouldn`t worry about firing one into my Wii, I would just make sure I didn`t take any updates from the NTFS games cause I have read this can screw up the console.

Softmod it. That'll live quite happily with the chip, they won't interfere with each other. Then use the backup loader to run the new games, rather than the normal way.
