Does anybody know why anyone would need to go into this hidden menu?

If you get one of those gnome things you need to enter it to make sure that there is a voltage being sent out or if you aquire a magic eye for changing channels upstairs.... so you may need to access it one day...;-)

You can also change the RF out channel from S-y to your telly, should the situation arise.....

Thats the installer menu.
Its mostly used to switch on your card.
the rf section is for turning on the power for the magic eye and also setting what channel you want to use to watch sky in another room. ie set the rf to 36 then tune in the tv to channel 36.
theres nothing magic in the menu. it wont get you any extra free tele.

just to add to this

if you have a second box and you use it somewere else like the inlaws :) lol you need this to do a callback once a month......so sky thinks its only being used at the same address as the other ;)

so its handy to know the secret menu code

i thought the menu access was 0,0,1 select not 4,0,1 or do they both do the same thing?

Agree about the hidden menu, especially when setting up one of those magic eye kits in another room. Cant see a reason though why sky hid this menu.

It means that it aint a secret.
The installers menu is not meant for the use of the "great unwashed", It has a couple of settings that need to be left alone unless you know what you are doing. Unless you know that your screen will go blank, when you change the RF modulator channel, you might think that you had broken it.
just imagine the volume of calls for support - if these options were available when you sat on the remote control.

yeah
its not a secret menu - its just an installers menu
if everyone had easy access to it, im sure sky would have lots of problems with kids and women changing lnb settings etc
