Think the easiest way for you will be via telnet as you lappie dont have serial port.

Are you able to connect dm500 to a router & lappie to it aswell?

If you router is close to the dm, just use a straight through patch cable. If not do u have a crossover cable so that we can connect the dm straight to your laptop?

Sorry need to know your setup so that I can guide you.

i have used a usb to rs323 cable output to do my d box before so it does work m8, and so long as you are using the correct settings on your laptop then there should not be a problem, i use flashfxp to send my file over

ok here my my lack of knowledge comes to show even more lol the cross over cable , i get confused, do they both look the same as ethernet cables ? i have one of those, but as i understand there normal ethernet and a cross over, they both have the same ends ? i can easily go get the connector from maplin . i got a couple of ethernet cables with my modem. so these wont be cross over right ?

usb to rs323 . somebody told me u cant link through usb b4, guess they dont know what they talking about right . im sure maplin would have 1 of those in, i know ill get ripped off coz they charge the world but i dont care lol just wanna be able to do thise once and for all :)

Ok follow this: -

1. Buy yourself a crossover cable.

2. Goto dreambox network settings & ensure dchp box is ticked, then power off dreambox. Connect crossover cable to dmreabox & laptop.

3. Go to your laptops nework card properties and set ip to 192.168.001.002, subnet 255.255.255.0 & leave gateway & dns blank.

4. Reboot pc, then bootup dreambox.

5. Goto dreambox network settings & check what the ip is.

6. Open flashxp or whatever ftp software you have & ftp your image to /tmp/, then rename to backup.img .

7. goto run > cmd > then type > telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the ip of your dreambox), it will ask for user & password, root + dreambox.

8. Once logged in type this command > cd /tmp && eraseall /dev/mtd/3 && cp backup.img /dev/mtd/3 && reboot

9. Thats it, let it flash & reboot itself. Leave it alone until its rebooted. Takes a little while.

Btw, when posting a couple of mins apart, please use edit button :)
