The BBC has launched a version of iPlayer that is fully optimised for TV display via the Nintendo Wii.

A version of the iPlayer service delivering video in a format compatible with the Wii's Flash 7 software was made available in april however, users had to use the standard iPlayer interface optimised for computers to navigate to the content.

Anthony Rose, head of the BBC's online media group, said today that a new "big screen" version of the iPlayer interface designed to be more usable at the Wii's screen resolution has launched.

"The new Wii version has a simplified user interface that presents just a few options on screen at a time and nice big chunky controls - easy to aim at with a Wiimote," explained Rose.

All programmes now play back in full screen mode by default; however, because the no advancements have been made to the video codecs supported on the Wii since April, video quality remains the same.

Rose added that the "big screen" version of iPlayer may be adapted in the future to serve other games consoles and other set top boxes.
