Right - drilling through floorboard beams in upstairs bedroom, can i drill anywhere in them to feed lighting cables downstairs in the lounge because i am fitting lots of spotlights ???

if your on about going thru the joists, you should drill through the middle rahter than near the top, as the joists won't loose much of their strength that way (and obviously your less likely to get a nail thru the cable too)

also stating the obvious but us sparkies have seen it alll...

just make sure you are not overloading the circuit.

one example is a guy that stuck an extra 7 100w spots on his 1mm lighting curcuit and wonder why the cale was getting hot & the breaker kept going off!

do some maths unless its LEDS!

how many watts are they each?

I presume they're mains voltage? (ie no transformer?)

The bulbs are 50 watts and yes they are mains operated ! Can u offer any advise about cable size or anything else. They will be on a Ring Circuit as well ???

not being funny here but you dont appear to know what you are doing?
this is a new installation which will this be covered by the p regs.
as such you cannot do it as you cannot certificate yourself anyhow, even if you did know what you were doing.
be very careful, if you carryout any changes to wiring which is covered by the building pregs, you stand to invalidate your house insurance as well as be fined.

Hmm BUT if i do the job CAN i get a qualified Electician to certify for me ?? Which overall will make the job cheaper !

right 18 lamps at 50 watts comes out at about 3.75 amps thats fk all then take the rest of the lights in the circuit into the equation and u probably will still be able to run them on 1mm i would use 1.5 due to correction factors and the fact i run all lighting in it
1.5 can carry about 20 amp clipped direct but i guess u will be burying the cables in the wall so if u use ur regs u can work out the current carrying capacity of 1mm or 1.5 bearing in mind the volt drop will be fk all n less u live in a mansion and chose a suitable breaker oh yer n as far as the part p police coming round if ur worried get a spark like me to test it though they will fail it if you wire it wrong and u will then have to pay them to put it right the better thing to do would be work with one for a bit and gain some experiance and when u are more competent as obviuosly u r not you will not have a problem putting a few spots in hope this helps
