Ofcom has announced an international agreement that secures near-universal availability of digital terrestrial television in the UK by 2012, along with agreements to support the further expansion of digital radio. The deal, which included France, the Netherlands, Belgium and the Republic of Ireland, relates to the international frequency plans of the UK’s broadcast signals. Without co-operation from the neighbouring countries, the UK may have been required to scale-down plans in the sector.

Following the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Regional Radiocommunication Conference (RRC-06) in Geneva, Ofcom revealed that it had achieved all of its objectives to secure a ‘smooth transition’ to digital broadcasting without international constraints.

“This accelerates the move to all-digital broadcasting,??? said Ofcom Chief Executive Stephen Carter. “After months of detailed negotiations involving more than 100 countries, this successful outcome is testament to the hard work and dedication of the UK delegation.???

Under the agreement, the UK will be permitted to use ‘all necessary transmitter sites’ to deliver digital terrestrial television to 98.5% of the population – the same number that currently receive analogue broadcasts.
