Most modern Linux distributions now allow you to shrink the windows partition to create room for the Linux installation HOWEVER there is always the risk that your windows partition may end up unbootable, so do not attempt to do this unless your are comfortable re-loading windows and you have all your data/software backed up.

The alternative is to add a second disk to your machine (assuming your setup will take it)

hi m8 you can use a partition tool in windows too split your partition too the size you want and then install Linux on it but make sure the you select install grub or lilo to the first part of the boot partition and then you will have a dual partition the default OS will be the Linux system

Use a virtual machine. I have vista and i use a virtual machine to run linux and xp pro. You have the option to save it like it has its own HDD.

Download Ubuntu from Download Ubuntu | Ubuntu (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. you can use the CD as a 'Live CD' to start with to see if you get on with it without installing anything, then once you choose to install it's a very simple guided process that sets you up with a dual-boot system if you already have an operating system (e.g. XP) installed - it'll even transfer your docs and settings over from XP so you get all your bookmarks etc in your linux system

I agree with Declan. Installing in a virtual machine is the best way to test and experience a new operating system without any commitment. My preference is VirtualBox by Oracle but you can use whatever you like.
