Im going to ask what everyone makes of the new today as the report is HDDVD is going to loose the war against Bluray. I have a toshiba HD player but luckily have a PS3 phew! Problem is now its out in the open & I should have kept an eye on it. What I need to know is shall I sell the Toshiba player & HDDVDs a.s.a.p?? Should it be done now rather than later? Or is there a chance (i personally doubt) HD will ge ther in the end?
I knew this would happen one day & suspected bluray would win!
Also start a debate on which you all would prefer. There isnt much difference I know that e.g Bluray more memory & HD PORN!! damn lol

I did read that even tho blue ray may have won hd dvd will not die out all together i would think it will be like beata max it will go on for some time to come yet.The head of toshiba said
" Nishida said his company had confidence in HD DVD as a technology and tried to assure the estimated 1 million people, including some 600,000 people in North America, who already bought HD DVD machines by promising that Toshiba will continue to provide product support for the technology."best not to throw it out just yet, blue ray is not out of the woods yet as i think the only blue ray player that can be updated is the ps3.Me i am waiting for a blue ray recorder having said that my tv only displays 1080i weather there is much differance between that and 1080p i dont no but thats another thread

Well, Toshiba have said the're ceasing shipment of all HD-DVD players by end of March. I'd think that would mean that production would close by early-mid March... and raw material procurement would pretty much cease now.

Toshiba will indeed offer product support... but it won't produce any new hd-dvd players/drives, nor will it pump money into R&D. So, that is indeed the end of HD-DVD... unless Toshiba pick up the baton again.

If I had a HD-DVD player, I'd want to get rid of it asap. If I didn't get a good price, I would use it as an upscaling DVD player... and for the few hd-dvds I would have had.

On your other point, firmware upgrades for BD-DVD is like with any product. The advantage the PS3 has is that it is connected to the internet and firmware updates are provided directly via system updates. This is an ideal situation. The fact that other BD-DVD players don't have updateable firmware is by-the-by. How many dvd players in the market are actually updateable via the internet?? Quite frankly... almost none. If you wanted a DVD player to play MP3/divx dvds, you'd go out and buy a new dvd player which would do those, right? So, that must not be taken as a negative point for the BD-DVD format. It actually supports the cause of buying a ps3 instead of a bd-player as you'll get a fantastic BD-player/gaming/media centre/computer solution... all in one. In about a year, the BD-players will probably cost about 50-100... but till then, the PS3 will rule!!

This is indeed the end of the road for HD DVD, I bought the HD-DVD addon for the xbox 360, though I used it with my HTPC for watching HD-DVD's that way. Thankfully I only paidd 100 euros, and as such I dont feel too put out.

I did see an offer there a few days ago, just after the Toshiba announcement, offering a Toshinba HD-DVD Player and 9 HD-DVD's for 102 euro shipped.......so clearly the sell off has begun.

As said you can use it as an upscaller for standard def DVDs, but the stores will also start selling off the HD-DVD discs at discount prices so you should be able to pick a few bargins too...

In a high definition rerun of the VHS/Betamax conflict of the 1970s and 1980s, the two rival formats have slugged it out over the last two years in a battle for our hearts, minds and wallets.
Japanese manufacturer Toshiba launched HD-DVD, confident that the format, which was based on existing DVD technology, would be perfectly placed to take advantage of the rise in sales of high definition TVs.
After all, they reasoned, even though HD-DVDs were not able to store quite as much data as a Blu-ray disc, the discs and players were cheaper to produce than Sony's format, and the pictures and sounds were just as good.
HD-DVD was also, just, first out of the traps and initially had strong support from Hollywood. But the expected sales never materialised, just one million in total, as consumer indifference and confusion set in.
And of course, there was Sony's trump card. The Blu-ray playing Playstation3 may have underperformed commercially as a gaming console, but in the past 18 months they have managed to get six million of them into our living rooms. More and more movie studios got behind Sony's format, and Warner Brothers' announcement at the beginning of the year that it would exclusively support Blu-Ray effectively signalled HD-DVD's demise.

The final nail was hammered into the format's coffin earlier this month, when the worlds largest retailer, Wal-Mart, threw its considerable weight behind Blu-ray. So, Toshiba and its partners will now cease producing HD-DVD hardware and Blu-ray is left with a clear run at the high definition market.

As you say little_pob it is indeed dead but they still make a good upscaling dvd player i think the ps3 tiped the scales

Alright no need to boast. lol.
Lucky you have a combo player. Ive got a PS3 so im not stuck with out but problem is my toshiba HD player is no good as an upscaler either as id just use the PS3. Im trying to get rid now but its been advertised twice now with several HDDVDS & not selling. Im looking at getting around ?100 does anyone think thats too much? Its a big loss anyway being as I only bought the thing before xmas.

The Xbox 360 HD-DVD player was retailing for ?130 new prior to the Toshiba Announcement, it is now available here in Ireland for sub ?50 as retailers try and sell off their stock.

Unfortunately for you you will take a big hit on selling this. I paid ?100 for my xbox drive and can only get 30 euro for it if I sell, bearing in mind that HD-DVD's will also be sold off cheaply in the coming months I have decided to keep it and avail of some cheap Hi-Def movies instead.

I bought 2 of the XBOX 360 HD-DVD players :(

I don't know whether to buy a BluRay player or wait and see what happens. There's speculation that legal movie downloads will be the next big thing without any discs at all.

As stated above its seems the best bet is buy bluray. Ive managed to get rid of my player now luckily ?100 still lost out tho. Ive had a good read up myself & id say you would be safe with bluray it will win in the end. ;)

I hope movie downloads isnt the way forward. But I can see how it would happen as its happed with music. I personally like a big row of origianal dvds to show off my collection.

There are still loads of films available on HDDVD and they are being sold cheaply now. Worth holding on to the player. (I still own a laserdisk player and get films from ebay occasionally)
