I've had a sony and currently use a philips DVP5980 upscalling DVD player.
To be honest I prefered the sony. The player was quicker to load discs and resume from where I turned the player off (excellent feature for TV series with a play all option by the way). The only down side was its complicated method to make multi region, as it needed a learning remote with macro functions. The philips has a quick remote hack to make region free, upscales to 1080p, divx support, USB port that supports any size FAT32 drive I've tried on it, and has a 25 disk memory. Unlock method and amazon link here. (http://world-of-digital.com/forums/f100/hdmi-upscaling-16621.html#post113466)
However, a few of the people on AVforums are recommending that unless you're buying a decent quality player (e.g. a HD-DVD or blu-ray player) to just set the player to output at 576p over HDMI and let the TV upscale the picture for you. The arguement being that your ?300+ TV will upscale better than a ?25-50 HDMI enabled DVD player (it already upscales your standard def freeview, sky and/or cable broadcasts anyway).
