A photograph of a small blonde girl in Morocco is to be examined by experts investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The picture was taken by a Spanish holidaymaker just over three weeks ago in the town of Zinat.
Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann are understood to have seen the image and their spokesman Clarence Mitchell says it could be significant.
The image shows a light-skinned, blonde-haired girl being carried on an elderly woman's back.
Madeleine, four, went missing from her parents' holiday apartment in Praia Da Luz, Portugal, on May 3.
Despite being declared suspects in the disappearance of their own daughter, Mr and Mrs McCann have repeatedly insisted that they believe Madeleine could still be alive.
The photograph emerged after a series of other reports of possible sightings of Madeleine in Morocco were publicised in recent days.
It follows two sightings of a blonde girl matching Madeleine's description in Marrakech on May 9, and reports of a third sighting in northern Morocco later the same month.
Spanish tourist Clara Torres said she saw the fair-skinned girl, who was being carried in a sling, with a group of North Africans walking by the side of the road.
The image was passed to local police by Ms Torres after she heard news of the various possible sightings of Madeleine in Morocco.
A Spanish government official in Albacete said the photograph had then been passed on to Interpol.
The photograph is now expected to be analysed by experts at the British Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.
They are already scouring photographs taken by holiday makers in the Algarve around the time of Madeleine's disappearance using high-tech face mapping technology to identify potential suspects.
It is hoped that the same technology could be used to establish whether the child in the image could be Madeleine.
Mr Mitchell said: "We do not comment on any individual sightings. However in this case the picture was passed to the relevant authorities as soon as it was received and Gerry and Kate are obviously keen for it to be analysed as quickly as possible."

I have got to say yes it does look like her, hope it is her :fc:

Pictured girl 'is not Madeleine'

The picture was taken in Morocco three weeks ago.
A blonde girl photographed in Morocco is not missing Madeleine McCann, according to journalists who met her.
British and Spanish reporters claim to have traced the girl, pictured being carried on a Moroccan woman's back.
London newspaper the Evening Standard says the girl is a five-year-old from the village of Zinat.
The McCanns' spokesman said the news, if true, was disappointing. Madeleine disappeared on 3 May from a holiday apartment in Portugal.
Easily traced
Experts were said to be examining the image, taken three weeks ago by a Spanish tourist, in the hope that the girl was the missing four-year-old from Rothley, Leicestershire.

Five-year-old Bushra was mistaken for Madeleine
But Rashid Razaq, the Standard reporter who flew to Morocco from London, said he had seen the youngster in the picture.
"She has got a resemblance to Madeleine but when you see her properly, it is obvious it isn't her."
He said the picture was of a girl he named as five-year-old Bushra, daughter of an olive farmer.
The Spanish reporter who also claims to have traced the girl in the picture says she is a Moroccan of Berber origin.
The journalist told the BBC he found her by showing the photo to villagers, who quickly identified the family.
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell promised that the search for Madeleine would continue.
Madeleine McCann
Madeleine has not been seen since 3 May
There have been several reported sightings of Madeleine since she went missing, but as yet none has led to a significant breakthrough.
Most recently, a British man believed he had spotted Madeleine near a hotel in Marrakech in Morocco.
A Norwegian tourist also reported seeing her on the same day, in the same place.
In July, another reported sighting, this time in the eastern Belgian town of Tongeren, proved to be a false alarm.
Portuguese police made Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate, formal suspects in the inquiry into their child's disappearance earlier this month.
The couple insist she was abducted while they ate at a nearby tapas bar with friends.

I really don't think she's alive any more. Fundamentally, her parents are responsible for her disappearance - either by leaving her alone at night or by doing away with her. There are many theories - I think both parents must have given her sedatives thinking the other one hasn'tand therefore over dosed her. But they had to cover it up otherwise they would have lost custody of the other two kids. It's sad.
