I like using AVG from grisoft, it is non obsturctive and I have not had a problem since I installed it. It updates itself on a daily basis. I also run spybot search and destroy and spywareblaster to keep the crap out.

the problem I had with zonealarm was that if it goes tits up the you have to sit there and delete the files one at a time in the registry, although this was a long time ago and they might have changed by now.

I've not used anything for around 4 years. I've had a couple of hitches but nothing that couldn't be easily sorted out (spyware etc).

I find antivirus absolutely useless as, obviously, it takes a new virus to come out for them to patch it so you are vunerable until they do. Depending on where you browse and download from makes it more and less likely to come into contact with newer viruses.

I reformat my PC's every month or so and always have the xp2 firewall on with certain ports open for my own benefit. Basically here are a few rules to live by to make sure your PC stays as secure as possible...

With regards to P2P only ever download MP3 and make sure that it is definitely an MP3 extension as they can be disguised. Its not easy to attach a virus onto an MP3 but its very easy to do it to most other extensions.

Never ever ever go onto dodgy porn sites. There are very few that won't fill your PC full of crap so just stay away from them, if you want porn thats what torrents are for.

Stay away from all crack sites. They fill your PC full of spyware, mallware and in some cases trojan's. Again if you want a crack get it via torrents.

The safest way to download IMO is newsbins though but torrents is a very close second.

Any emails you recieve from people on your lists claiming to have tried out some software and click "here" to download etc, avoild like the plague. Same goes for active x controls from sites that you are not sure of. Make sure you are 110% sure of anything you click "yes" to when it comes to downloading and installing. Links via emails are really getting out of control at the moment and some of the dodgy bank/fleebay/store emails that are going around are pretty convincing. Never ever every type a password for anything into anything when you have clicked a link via an email.

Make sure you use the XP SP2 firewall. I spoke to someone who does not work for a living and who has done quite a few years for computer fraud. He said that if i used XP that he "owned me" in around 2 mins. He did however mention that the SP2 firewall is actually pretty hard to get past. No doubt there are people better at hacking and cracking than him but its nice to know someone who makes a living out of ripping of peoples PC's can't get into mine.

Live by these rules and you will be hassle free on the internet.

Scott =op

The simple solution is get a Mac ;) Other than that, I find Norton too clumsey and cumbersome. I've installed Avast on a few PCs, which is free and updates itself daily with new definitions and is very effective.

NOD 32 is defo recommended

However, a program called BitDefender 9 Professional is a gem. Its an all in one solution with a Virus Bulletin 100% award an anti spam and firewall and its a tiny program which you wont even notice on your system. It also has a little file zone/internet zone access button in the bottom right of the screen which shows activity when your files or internet are being accessed so you can keep a check on suspicious behaviour.

AVG anti-virus stays free (true)

Users of a free version of GRISoft's AVG anti-virus software have begun receiving pop-up messages this week warning that their package would no longer be supported from 15 January.

This prompted concerns among a number of Reg readers that GRISoft was ditching the free version of its security software. Actually, the firm is simply encouraging users to upgrade from AVG Free version 7.1 to AVG Free version 7.5, which boasts improved performance and compatibility with Windows Vista.

A spokesman for GRISoft confirmed that the firm had no plans to ditch its line of free software, while stressing users would enjoy improved support with the paid-for version of the software.

"Users should be presented with a dialogue which explains their options," a GRISoft spokesman said. He conceded that, judging by the handful of responses we've received, this dialogue box was perhaps not as clear as it might have been

Combine the fact that it fails to detect a hell of a lot of trojans/viruses and malware with it's bloated nature and the fact that it often doesn't uninstall fully leaving you with a non-booting or corrupted system which requires hours to repair and you come to the conclusion that it itself could be considered malware.

I use Network Associates enterprise (McAfee) anti-virus, been using it for 7 years or so now. Haven't had any problems so far, it updates every day etc.

I'm using avast, it scans before windows boots, so any viruses that activate with windows are found

I think the best software is kaspersky because it is much better with detecting viruses with well performance.

I read a little bit of this thread and it made me laugh a wee bit, not that I was laughing at anyone, I was just thinking of how gullable the normal public are really.

If your running something like windows 7 and the firewall on and the built in windows defender in realtime (running all the time) mode then that is all the common user needs, unless of course you use a lot of sites you shouldnt be on in the first place, lol, I wont mention those sites, but we all know what we should and shouldnt be looking at, dont we ????

Then, if you ever think you might have a little infection you just use a simple online free virus scan and fix, and it does its job, but very seldome will that ever happen if you are not looking at really really dodgy stuff or downloading and opening very dodgy stuff, and even at that, before you even open file whether they are zipped or not you can use a free online free file scanner too and it will scan that file and tell you if it is clean.

For most normal people what I say is 99% perfect, for the other 1% then they will know who they are and they should know where they got thier problems from, lol, maybe then you would want to spend unnecessary money on anti virus protection software etc, to me though and this is my opinion, its a waste of time, money and effort, I used to be like all you guys for years using the best of the best of anti virus and firewall suites etc, and after quite a while the penny dropped when I done a lot of tests, my pc was actually just as good protected with windows inbuilt security than with all the stuff people would purchase (i didnt purchase them, trial only, cough cough splurt, ,lol), and as I mentioned, if there was any doubt in anything you just run the online full free scan & fix softwares availabe, problem solved and no money spent.

Best bit about it all is that after many years doing what I said I never get any problems with viruses etc, but before that there was always problems when i was using purchased anti virus software, so there you have it, the evidence is right there, they suck you in, and you want to buy into the whole thing more and more and more, have a try at what I am saying for maybe 6 months or so and then come back and tell me if I was right or wrong, I can already gaurantee for a normal user that doesnt go and look and download really bad stuff then you will be 99.9% perfect, if not then tell me so that i can test what it is your doing on my machine too.

ffs, just realised how old this thread is, lol, if i knew that I wouldnt have posted, I looked in edit to remove my post but there is no option to do so, if any mods or admin are around can they remove my post here as its a complete waste of time, unless of course you think it serves a purpose, its up to you, thanks. :)

I would just leave the post?
Whenever it was first posted, it is still your up to date observations on the value of paying through the nose for anti virus software.
You are right, if your running a windows system nowadays its inbuilt firewall and MSE which are free downloads, are perfectly adequate for most users.
It is frequently updated as well to deal with new viruses or Trojans found in the wild, with no time or usage restraints.
