I am a newbie with a little knowledge of electronics. Looking for a fix for a box a friend passed to me. Very nice fix with the capacitors.

Twobeercans MEGA THANKS !!

Superb instructions with pictures :)

Any newbie like me make sure that the capacitors are put in the same way they were taken out. Check the stripe on them first before you take them off and make sure they news ones go on the same way. You could get a popping noise otherwise and have to replace.

Thanks for The Guide but I couldn't get your previous version of The Guide to work for me.

So I would be interested in hearing from anyone that thinks they will have more success than I did!

:please:

if the previous version didn't work then you need to use this version, it cover 90% of the rest of the problems.

thanks for that , chipped of the two smelf caps at tuner and a dead box is alive and well . being a half blind ex tv engineer curiousity got the better of me , the guide mentioned dirty simm socket and if left on for a while box will spring into life . the three caps the guide recommended changing can also cause this due to the electrolytic coating aging when the box is powered up the coating rebuilds after a while and the cap kicks in again , so i would change these even if they werent the problem , re the 35 volt testpoint - the guide mentions if there is no voltage here then file it , a quick test here would involve cutting the test point link in the middle if the voltage appears on the link side going towards the the power supply then it may mean a short toward the control chip that controls the tuners varicap tuning volts this could be a big problem , now if after cutting the link if no voltage appears on either side of link then there is only a couple of cheap parts between teh link and teh power supply i.e one cap one diode one regulator ,this arrangment is identical to how its done on tv sets , go back through these unil you find a voltage , the most likely culprit is the rectifier diode coming straight of the transformer change these and 35 volt rail should be restored , caution these power supplys have 380 v dc present , a good replacement diode can be found on any old tv chassis look under the line transformer and any diode coming of its pins should do the job...if parts arent available right way try this = leave 35volt testpoint link open , solder a red wire onto the side of the link going to the tuner , now a black wire soldered to the metal can of the tuner connect to a variable power supply set to around 30 volts dc , if you dont have this then 4 pp3 9v batteries in series will do to test if the box now tunes .in fact it might be easier to do this first before changing stuff
