Suppose you are choosing between two flat panel TVs that are otherwise identical, but one has 1366x768 pixels and the other has 1280x720.

Both these screen sizes are in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio for widescreen TV. But 768 pixels is the native vertical size of XGA computer displays, whereas 720 pixels is native for 720p HDTV.

In each case, once you've chosen one type of screen, using it for the other purpose will require resampling and antialiasing the picture: this is perfectly doable, but the picture won't be quite as good.

Neither screen can display 1080i or 1080p HDTV in full resolution.
Which screen size would you prefer?

As you say, it depends what you will use the screen for.
I'd probably go for 1280x720 since then my hd broadcasts will be 1:1 and almost all pc graphics card drivers have a setting for this res now.
