Hmmmm...interesting point....do you think it would work the sane as a multi wan router thuogh ? ie,,,be able to perform the tasks the router will ?....i have maxed out my pci slots with nics now, with 3 modems running on seperate nics i can attain an average of 3000Kb/s which is quite good, i have some usb ethernet adapters as well but when i connect another modem using these the speed seems to drop...dunno whether thats because the ethernet to usb causes a bottle neck or whether my connection is maxed out ? as i cant connect any more dedicated nic cards i cant tell if i can get anymore speed, unless i can obtain some dual port nics.

I have a Netgear FVX538, that has two WAN ports.

You can set it to load balance between the two ports, and set protocols to be binded to specific WANs.

If there some speedtest software/websites that will test multiple downloads at the same time?

you can type 'beeline bandwidth' into google and try that...i am after more than 2 wan ports, at least four anyway...the linksys RV016 has 2 dedicated wans and 5 of the lan ports can be reconfigured into WANS also, though i am not sure whether they will balance the loads ?? do the tech specs need to state load balancing or is it standard ?...i have seen some mage routers with 13 WANS that say load balancing but they are 800 quid a piece!!

Hi, My Nephew hosts games on his Xbox.

He wants to combine two modems to increase his capabilities.

Is a WAN Router the only option or will two NICs in the same PC work with special software?

If so, what software should I be looking for?

TIA

wingate will do the job, thats what i am using at the moment but i dont think it works as well as a dedicated piece of hardware.

After a further conversation, I understand that the XBox plugs directly into the router.

No PC involved, so Wingate is not an option.

I know nothing about XBoxes so I'm assuming that you can't load Wingate onto the XBox's operating system?

I've bought a WAN router and it's on it's way from USA.

Xincom XC-DPG502.

Hopefully that will do the job.

I'm gonna give wingate a try - however I would be interested to know if anyone is using a mini linux distro, such as smoothwall, as a router?

Thanks

I've got the dual WAN router with two 10 MB modems connected. I tried downloading a movie off the News Server.

There's no difference at all!

No increase in Download speed so I'm thinking Upload speed will be the same.

Does anybody know if it's possible to double up/down speed?

You dont have it setup properly then, there must be a feature to balance the load....have you not read the manual mister ?? ...also you might need to configure your news proggie and saying that...i woukld imagine the router will need to merge the 2 connection int5o one pipe...i know that with wingate i have to set host address to 127.0.0.1 or something like that then bind modems and gateways to use it...i dont understand it as i followed a tut but it works.

Loady, I have read the manual but maybe I missed something. It's a steep learning curve for me.

A mate of mine who looka after his office network reckons I'll only be able to achieve 2 simultaneous 10 MB downloads and not 1 20 MB download which is what I'm hoping to achieve.

This is after a reboot.........

During a Newsgroup session.....

http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/2681/wanrouter02copyii9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Notice here how only one of the WANs is being used at 99%...

The Download maxed out at 12 Mbps for a couple of seconds, so it could be possible?

Any suggestions please?

hmmmmmm....have you tried changing that setting to 100% for each one...i cant see the point of having a piece of kit like that if you cant combine the connection....maybe you need to look more into setting up the news program to utilise it, im pretty sure there are other settings to make....can anyone else here give gwapo some more pointers ? untill i get mine i cant really help much...its going to be a steep learning curve for me as well....dont give up on it.

That's not the problem.

The maximum is 50%.

eg,if you put 55% in WAN1, WAN2 automatically drops to 45%

Loady, I did what you suggested and had a look at my Newsgroup Client (Newsbin Pro 5.01).

It works !!

I managed 19.2 Mbps

All I needed to do was allow more connections to the server. I increased it from 2 (default) to 16. Don't know why but 16 seems to be the magic number!

The router works with all the default settings.

I therefore recommend this WAN router. Obviously 3 or more WAN ports would be better than 2 but I am very happy. Especially if Virgin are going to double the Bandwidth in May :)

Found this on ebay - Draytek Vigor 3300V Enterprise Firewall Router. Up to 4 Load-balanced WAN Ports and you can add VOIP ports if you wish.

Damn, everyone's going to outbid me now :)

I have a duel wan router with 2 10mb modems on can confirm that you can only get 1.2mbs and this is the reason the modems have 2 ip addresses your news server i.e. gigganews only accept 1 ip address per account so when you connect with a duel load balancing router the ip address is rolling between both ip addresses so the news server rejects 1 connection as a multiple ip error. Im going to email gigganews to ask if they will accept 2 connections from my account but I don?t think they will. I tried using sockcap32 running newsbin through it but it didn?t work spent hours finding a working socks proxy cos my theory was that if I connected to a socks proxy before I get to the news server then they would only see 1 ip address. There are various proxy web based sites that tunnel for you but they charge like everyone else in the bloody world. Hope this was clear cheers

I just use news.blueyonder.co.uk and like I said earlier, I am downloading at 20 Mbps.

Have you tried the free news.blueyonder.co.uk ???
