OK first of all, the PC needs to have an ethernet port. . I'm guessing that since your using the Broadband modem via USB, then it maybe hasnt. So check the back of the PC for a network connector. If theres one there you are laughing, if not its about 10 quid for a PCI network card.

what speed is the laptop wireless? it will say either 802.11B which is 11mbit or 802.11G which is 54mbit. Personally I wouldnt cut corners and buy a cheaper 11B, as the 54G ones have a better range.

So you will need a 54mbit broadband router: The linksys WRK54G I have found to be reliable, although I am sure most decent branded routers are up to the task.

So then the connections:

your cable modem will need to be connected to your router via an ethernet Patch cable, and your router to your PC via the same sort of patch cable.

Turn everything on and then look in the router manual for the IP and password of the router. . . this will be a local IP address, like 192.168.1.1 or similar

put this IP into the address bar of your browser, and if all has gone to plan, you will get a configuration screen for the router. to be honest not much needs touching for the novice, apart from some security such as WEP. This will stop people within range from using your net connection for free, and possibly gaining access to your drives. just set a passphrase up in the router and then when configuring the laptop wireless, use the same passphrase.

If all goes well then you should have a fast secure wireless network.

If you get stuck anywhere in the procedure, then repost and I will do all I can to help

And most of the routers (at least the Netgear one definitely does) have a wizard to do the setup. As long as you don not initially play with the encryption etc, it should be pretty straight forward. Otherwise, could help using IM.
