If you're up for it then you should try building it yourself - providing you get decent OEM components at the right price (ie, dont try PC World) then you could build yourself a really cheap machine!

With the current prices I can build a Pentium 4 2.8GHz with 512MB RAM for just under ?155. Thats excludes the monitor and software, but you can grab a cheap flat screen monitor for a good price these days. Software you can get from various places ;)

If building isn't really for you (its actually not as hard as you think), then you could try Novatech or computer components pc systems, parts & peripherals aria (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. If money really is an issue then you should definitely try building the computer yourself like the others suggested.

Check out this guide for a good in depth look at building your own computer: Build Your Own PC (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. You should check out this site also: Build Your Own PC (Personal Computer) (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. I know a lot of people don't like dell for whatever reason but I find that they are actually quite reliable. I've used their pc's before and they all seem to handle really well.

Dell desktop computers - customise and buy your PC online (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. You always get some nice deals around this kind of time aswell.

I definitely don't suggest going to someplace like comet or another store like that to get your pc from. They are rubbish and you will have tons of different kinds of problems.

If you need anymore help just post and i'll do my best.

Its very easy to build your own computer you will get a manual with the motherboard you buy that will tell you exactly what to do and you will save a bit of money doing this.

Would agree with the comments about novatech etc...used to work for them. They also do bundles (mb, cpu, ram, etc) all assembled and tested......so building your own is even easier. I think ebuyer used to do something similar. Have a look at the clearance parts of there websites for some bargains.....sometimes there is good stuff in there, sometimes not.

I recently bought myself and my sister computers from Dell, they have good specs and offer good options if the PC breaks down. They also have good options so you can tailor to your needs.

you can buy a cheap pc from dell but look at how much they charge you for adding something like more memory or a graphics card they charge you way over the odds.

I am an IT engineer and have seen almost every type of PC from home builds to Huge mainframes.

I cannot see past Dell. Great equipment and reasonable prices.

Most important though their warranties are usually ace!!

How cheap are we talking? You could probably pick up something 2nd hand either for free or for under ?50 that will do basic tasks. Loads of people have old PCs kicking around they don't know what to do with since they aren't worth anything.

As for Dell, I would recommend them for business users but not for the home user anymore. Business users get a british call centre, home users get an overseas call centre which is often completely hopeless.

Dells free online chat is good have spoke to them a couple of times and they have been very good, sent me out the restore discs and xp cd for free.

Never tried it, but that sounds better than trying to phone them!

The business support is excellent, the other week a server PSU died. I had a new one sitting on my desk 2 and a half hours after phoning them. Impressive!

DELL is a good 1 ;)

Find a Notebook, Desktop, Server, Printer, Software, Service or Monitor at Dell. (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/desktops_good?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs)

mate go onto ebay and search for a user called stewartrecycling or eBay My World - stewartrecycling (http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/stewartrecycling)

He specialises in companies that have gone bust he takes the PC's and sells them, got one for my wee cousin for her birthday, then one for my aunt and my brother.

All dell never cost me more than ?60, all i had to do was come home and install windows XP

Good Luck

Mick
