Can you tell us the make and model of your PC, what operating system you are running, and how you are determining that you only have 480 MB RAM installed? I take it that you have purchased the pc with 1 gig of RAM, or have you installed a gig. If the latter, was there memory already in the pc?

If you enter the system bios, often by pressing F2 or Delete while the system is running its POST just after you switch it on, can you check what memory the BIOS reports?

If you download and install SiSoft SANDRA, it can run system diagnostics which among otyher things will report on your memory slots and their contents.

Do you have a seperate graphics card in your PC, or is it graphics directly on the motherboard ?
Some motherboards come with graphics built-in and use system memory for the graphics, something called SMA (Shared Memory Architecture). That may explain why you are seeing less memory than you should be seeing..

There is no seperate graphics card just the on board one. The computer when restatred shows that there is shared ram but it cant be using that much can it.

shared resources on pcs is never good. slows them down so much .! best to get independant resources for each section of your pc

Sounds like the stick is not 1gig but 512mb. That would make sense as 480mb + 32mb is 512, and 32mb is not an unusual size of memory for onboard/shared graphics cards. Does it say on the stick what it is?

It is a 1 gig stick because thats what it shows when put in my other computer. Therefore just ended up swapping sticks and all is fine, but don't no why it was showing 480mb.

Thanks for all the advice

On the website for your motherboard there should be a list of memory that is know to work properly on it, I would always check this before I buy any memory because some makes of memory dont seem to work right on some motherboards.

you try f2 for setup or something like that? See what it says in your bios screen?

just a quick question
you might find out the memory is high density mem
i had some and my mother board could only se half of it
did you buy it cheap from ebay?
