Hi

I have got a 360 on order and I fancy flashing the drive however the one thing I don't understand is the SATA bit
How do I know if my PC is possible of doing it?
I've built 2 PCs but god knows what board I used I just used ones that did the job
Can I look in the system in control panel in Xp to find out?
Please help

You're going to have to check the motherboards - either the manuals or the actual boards.

They are quite small black rectangles. Best bet is to look on google for a picture then check the boards.

You could just try checking your device manager

There isn't anything in my device manager about the SATA.

Which section of device manager would it be in?

all i can recommend is you take a look at the motherboard
then you will definatly know after that, if you have onboard sata
you will have to have specific chipsets, in order to be able to flash
ya drive

intel is fine
sis is no good
nforce 4 sata will work with with a modified flasher

thats all i know of off the top of my head
but there is info out there regarding what chipsets work and what dont

If you go onto the manufacturers website it should tell you which SATA controller is built in. If it is either incompatible or you don't have you will have to buy a SATA pci card, either VIA 6421L or VIA 6421A work great. The latter you can get easily on ebay for about £15 UK. If you are US go to newegg.com

another way of checking without opening the PC is look in the bios for any mention of SATA. old IDE is called PATA btw.

SATA only shows up on my device manager if I have RAID installed other wise it just shows up as a normal hard-drive does, and PATA is Parallel ATA not just IDE, IDE are called many different names like UATA.
I would say your best bet is to use everest home or belarc to find out the weither you have SATA on your motherboard.

use the latest bootmaker program or this bios tool to see what youve got

if u havent got onboard go out and get a sata pci card-via is by far the most compatible chipset
