    Re: building a wall

Building a wall is a skilled trade although if you are resonable with DIY you may be able to do it ok.

Its more to do with how much time it takes you...as long as you make sure every brick is more or less level.

Keep your bed of muck as even as you can and your bricks will be easier to lay.

The muck has to be just right.......too wet and you'll stain all the faces.....too dry and you wont be able to spread it evenly.

Once you have the first two corses laid......make sure the joints line up vertically.

Corners and piers are the hardest without dought.

If you make sure your corners or wall ends are straight, level and in line with each-other ...When you follow your brick line you cant go wrong.

On longer walls you will get a dip in the line so you have to level a brick in the center of the wall and use a piece of card to hold the line up.
...easiest way to level a dipped line it to look down its lenth....you can see when its straight.

    Have fun mate!

Have a go. I'm an electrician by trade, but have carried out lots of brick laying. I started by building walls and am now building extensions. As long as you take your time you will soon pick it up. Make sure you use a good quality spirit level, makes life easier when building pillars, ie knocking bricks level. good luck.

    Hi

Out of interest as I`m thinking of doing same, does your first 2 rows of bricks go below ground level or do you do your foundation up to ground level and start your bricks from there. Oh and does the height of the wall determine how deep your foundation should be.

    Thanks

    Re: building a wall

The foundations are normally finished below ground level.
You build up the bricks to a minimum of 6" above ground level preferably with engineering bricks and then lay your damp proof course (usually a length of plastic nowdays) on a bed of mortar(sand & cement mix).

18 inch foundations are usually sufficient for most walls although building control would not let you use this depth on a house extension.
