    QUESTION:
What are the chances of getting caught when watching my DBOX2, and how can I minimize this risk?

    LIAM SAYS:
Your chances of getting caught whilst watching a DBOX2 are practically zero. The UK cable system works on the principle of %u201Ctalkback%u201D. Talkback is a method that cable companies use to identify box locations, channels purchased etc. It can also be used to determine which channels you are watching, when you are watching them, and how long you are watching them for. Whilst this is a possibly, it is highly unlikely. Talkback can be used to monitor virtually every aspect of the cable box, but the costs involved with the extreme volume of monitoring and traffic do not make it beneficial to NTL/Telewest.
However, you should note that the DBOX2 does not have a talkback feature. Talkback was only implemented in the original Pace and Samsung receivers that are handed over to official subscribers. The DBOX2 was made in Germany, and Premiere (the cable company in Germany) did not utilize the talkback feature. You are therefore not required to cut any tracks or modify the circuit board of your DBOX2 to ensure your safety whilst watching your free service. NTL/Telewest are completely unable to detect what you have at the end of your line.
Saying this, there is one way that could be used to catch you out. This requires an engineer to physically come to your house, open up the brown/white box on your front wall, and attach specialist equipment. The theory is that if you have foreign equipment attached to the end of your feed (for example, a DBOX2) then %u2018noise%u2019 will be returned down the line. This is not a sure-fire method, and would never be adopted by the cable companies. There are various reasons for noise introduction, and the presence of noise on a feed cannot be used as a fact that you are watching free cable television.
We therefore have to conclude that the only 100% definitive way to be caught using a DBOX2 is for one of your so-called %u2018friends%u2019 or neighbours to telephone the company or a law enforcement agency and get them to check out the allegation. In short, do not be a big head and boast about your nice new shiny receiver as it may land you in trouble.
On a final note I must say that no single NTL engineer or employee has the legal right to enter your home without permission. Do not let anybody hassle you to enter the premises as they cannot legally do so without a warrant. In the unlikely event that a warrant has been issued then you may as well hold your hands high as you have been well and truly caught. A warrant is only issued under specific circumstances, and enough evidence must have been gathered against you to warrant a purpose to enter your home.
Later UK images for the DBOX2 include a feature called the 'PANIC BUTTON' which, when pressed, will wipe any evidence of illegal channel viewing from your DBOX2. This can be used as a last resort, but you should note the following, taken from NTL%u2019s latest Terms and Conditions:
'The connection of unauthorized receivers - regardless of make, model or modifications - is not permitted'

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
How long will the DBOX2 last, and is it worth me spending out all that money with the possibility of just a few days usage?

    LIAM SAYS:
The cable hack has been going for several years and there have been a lot of ups and downs along the way. In recent events we have seen a lot of the different card types being rendered useless, with threats of future attacks from the cable companies. This has meant that quite a few people are still without their free TV. Let it be known that this is not the first time in history that an attack of this sort has been launched, and neither will it be the last. Let it also be known that during these attacks, the DBOX2 was never affected once. The reason for this is that the DBOX2 does not use a smartcard, and does not have the talkback feature ? the cable company are powerless to do anything to your box. Instead of a smartcard, the DBOX2 uses a software program which emulates one. This ?emulator? is what gives you all your desired channels. A software program can obviously never be corrupted, especially if it is read-only. Therefore, instead of destroying your card and rendering your box useless, the ?emulator? will only crash and your pocket money will be unaffected.

A benefit of using the DBOX2 is that the emulators are originally designed for use with Satellite providers who are using the same or similar encryption methods as NTL/Telewest. The UK cable providers are using ?Nagra1? encryption, which is something that has already been widely cracked worldwide. Therefore, each time NTL/Telewest initiate an attack on the cards, the emulator will ignore it and continue to work as normal, because it has already seen that sort of attack before on the Satellite scene. You will rarely have an interruption to your free TV viewing.

With this in mind, it is safe to assume that the DBOX2 will last longer than any other cable receiver in existence, due to its open-source nature and cardless-support. If the box was to ever go down then I could virtually guarantee that it would be working again within 24 hours ? the programmers behind the DBOX2 are amazing and can achieve more than you could ever imagine.

However there is one other problem that we need to look at ? encryption changing. It?s worth noting that NTL and Telewest have recently merged together into a single company, with Richard Branson being brought into the deal. This is particularly worrying for cable enthusiasts as it now means that the cable company has more money and power than before, which could ultimately result in the end of the cable hack as we know it. It is highly likely that some time in the future the encryption method (currently Nagra1) will be upgraded to something a little more complex. It has been previously mentioned that NTL/Telewest may be thinking of moving over to Nagra2 encryption, but it would be sensible to dismiss this myth until suitable evidence has been gathered. Nagra2 is already cracked worldwide to some degree, and it would therefore not be beneficial to the company to upgrade from one ?already cracked system? to another.

The main point here is that the new merger brings in more money and therefore more power to the company. In any case of encryption change, the DBOX2 is the box that is most likely to be back up and running before the other generation of receivers; again due to its open-source nature and massive worldwide user base.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
I have heard that NTL/Telewest will soon be launching a new HD (High Definition) service. How will I receive this service and what complications may arise?

    LIAM SAYS:
Whilst it may seem obvious; you need to know that to receive a HD (High Definition) service you will need to have a compatible television ? a standard TV will not be able to cope with any HD services ever available as the technology is completely different; and eventually your standard television set will become obsolete. You also need to realize that as well as a compatible TV, you will also require a compatible receiver. Unfortunately, the DBOX2 is not capable of receiving any High Definition services.

There has previously been talk of modifying the receiver so that it would be able to receive High Definition transmissions. Please forget about any talks you may have seen or heard regarding this matter. Whilst the DBOX2?s processor is not powerful enough to handle the transmission, simply overclocking it to a suitable speed will not help. The MPEG decoder chips inside the box will not be able to process the signal and will therefore result in a mess on your screen. Replacing the MPEG decoder chips is not as simple as 1,2,3 ? it is a hefty job and would also involve reworking the circuit board and tracks. You would be far better off in buying a ******** receiver which can already process High Definition transmissions.

Currently there are no HD ready ******** receivers on the market. The upcoming Dreambox 8000 will support High Definition, and will also use similar software to the DBOX2. Its price tag however is looking set to be in the region of around ?500.

But what about all these people that cannot afford to upgrade to an HD ready television right now? It is sensible to say that once NTL/Telewest finally roll out their High Definition service, it will be run alongside the existing service. This means that people without HD compatible televisions will still be able to purchase channel packages from the company at the standard cost. It also means that those that already have sets that are compatible with High Definition signals will still be able to benefit from hacked cable television ? although it won?t be in the quality that you would generally expect.

At some point in the future you will find that High Definition will eventually take over the standard service completely, and you will be forced to buy a TV which is compatible. This is true for Cable, Satellite and Freeview. This ?take over? is still a long way off, and by the time it is here then it is likely to have been cracked already ? although it is expected that more powerful encryption will be used with this more desirable service.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
I need to use the ?ANTENNA OUT? on my DBOX2 as my television does not have a scart socket. Why do I not get any output on my TV screen when using this method?

    LIAM SAYS:
The ?antenna out? port on the DBOX2 is simply a pass-through and does not generate any output. It is not designed to be used as a replacement output for scart. This is a similar case with the supposed ?component out? ports on the DBOX2 ? whilst audioL and audioR are functional, the third port is an old-style connector for controlling a VCR and does not generate any output to the TV screen ? these ports are to be used for external audio components only.

Barf (a very intelligent and well known modder for the DBOX2) has created a modification to the DBOX2 which allows more outputs, as shown here: Hidden Content . Credit to Barf for the work there.

However, more users are beyond this stage and are just looking for a simple fix. If you really must get your DBOX2 to work with your (old) television set then you will need to buy an adapter to convert the scart signal to a standard RF input. At the time of writing I couldn?t find a suitable converter which I could reference here. However, if all else fails you may be able to find an old VCR laying around which has a scart input, and connect the DBOX2 to that. The VCR will then have an RF socket which you can connect to your television set.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
I have a German plug on my DBOX2. Which converter should I buy so that I may connect it to a UK power line?

    LIAM SAYS:
In short, there is absolutely no need to go out and buy a converter. When I first got my DBOX2 I was a little worried about the power supply, and eventually connected it using a standard 1 amp shaver adapter. It worked well, but after half hour use the fuse burnt out. If you want a quick and easy solution then I would suggest going out and buying a shaver adapter ? you can pick them up from Asda or Wilkinsons for as little as 54p. You will need to replace the 1 amp fuse with a 13 amp to ensure a reliable connection ? 1 amp is simply too low and is not a safety feature for shavers.

The power supply for the DBOX2 is capable of running on UK mains without any modification. Sagem users will therefore be pleased to know that their DBOX2 uses a standard ?figure of eight? cable ? look at the end to see what I mean. You can simply replace this with a standard UK figure of eight cable and plug it straight in. These cables are commonly used with most household appliances and you are very likely to have a spare one laying around somewhere amongst all your goodies. If you don?t, then pop to your local store and pick one up for less than a pound.

Nokia users are unlucky in the fact that their power cable is moulded inside the box and cannot be as easily interchanged. You can, however, just chop off the German plug and wire up a UK plug in its place. There is no earth wire, so just connect the live and neutral and screw the plug together. Again, you can just simply plug it in without any worries.

For Nokia users that want that extra ?professional effect?, you can also go one step further. A tacky white plug on the end of a black lead doesn?t look too good, wouldn?t it look a lot better if the plug was black and moulded? Open up the DBOX2 casing and locate the internal yellow plug which connects to the power supply circuitry. You will see that the brown and blue wires join up as expected. Simply purchase your pre-moulded plug, feed the wire through the whole and connect the wires identically. Screw the case back on and you now have a professional looking DBOX2 with a rather snazzy moulded plug on the end.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
    1. I appear to have lost my Front Row channels recently, how can I get them back?
    2. Since losing my Front Row I have a new channel named ?FilmFlex?, what is this?
    3. What is this new VOD service and how can I receive it on my DBOX2?

    LIAM SAYS:
?Front Row? is an old pay-per-view system previously used by NTL/Telewest which allowed subscribers to purchase movies for a set fee. The system was flawed because all ?streams? were broadcast in the standard encrypted format. The original box would not display these streams on the EPG but would store their location in memory. When the user made a purchase, the box would automatically switch to the appropriate stream and show the content on-screen. The ?talkback? mechanism is then used to notify the cable company headend that a purchase has been made, and the price would then appear on your next statement.

The problem however came from a fault contained within the software loaded onto the boxes ? confirmation of payment acceptance was never checked before showing the movie. The ?talkback? feature could be disabled so that the cable company was never notified of the purchase, and the film would then commence without paying a single penny. Eventually NTL/Telewest realized this, and tried to stop it, with limited success. Due to extreme over-use by hackers in the cable scene, the company eventually decided that they were losing too much money, and upgraded the service.

The new service is now named ?Filmflex? as opposed to ?Front Row?, and works on an entirely different system called VOD (Video on Demand). Video on Demand is just that ? its only available on demand. There are no streams that are broadcast continually, and each purchase must be authenticated against the cable company headend. Once you are authenticated, the headend will create a private stream specifically for you to use, and the box will then tune to that stream. If no authentication is made, then the stream is never created, and therefore there is nothing to watch. The new VOD features bonus features such as fast forwarding and rewinding the stream at your leisure, and pausing it for later viewing ? it is actually a half decent service.

As there are no streams running continuously, there is nothing to tune in to, and nothing that we can watch. There is a way of viewing streams that have already been purchased by a legitimate customer in your area, but these can be fast forwarded and rewound at their leisure, and you must perform a manual scan each time. The chances of you finding a stream at the beginning of a program and watching it interrupted are extremely low. It is also worth mentioning that the full security for these VOD streams has not yet been implemented.

To conclude, once Front Row has stopped broadcasting in your area, you will not be able to receive free Pay-per-View. Whilst you may be able to locate a minority of VOD streams, it is generally a waste of time and nobody bothers. Filmflex is the new service, and it?s here to stay.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
I have just received/flashed my box and the user interface is in German. How can I change this to the English language and be able to receive TV channels?

    LIAM SAYS:
This can be a difficult question to answer as it may involve something as simple as pressing a few buttons to something as complex as FTP%u2019ing replacement files and CHMODding. The simple method is provided below but it should be stressed that many of the newer released images only include a single german language file, Complications can arise if the image is in SquashFS format.

Adapted from a post that I made earlier today:

    3. Highlight ENGLISH, and hit OK.
    4. Press HOME/BACK to enter the settings menu.
    5. Press RED to save the settings.
The user interface is now in English language.
If you get to step 3 and discover that the only option available is %u2018deutsch%u2019 then your image does not have the English language installed by default. As this is just a rough guide I won%u2019t go into the details on how to add the language, but continue reading the important note below.

German images do not contain the required support for use in the UK. They will not be able to correct perform a scan, and they will not decode premium channels %u2013 you will only receive FTA (Free to Air) or Freeview. A lot of work is required to get them to perform correctly in the UK, and you are therefore advised not to bother with a native German image. There are plenty of UK alternatives in the downloads section.

If there is a specific German image that you wish to use then you may like to get in touch with one of the resident image modders on this site. Examples are myself, renwich, hunter007, etc. If it is something new or exciting then one of us may be inclined to mod it for the UK. You can, of course, attempt it yourself as well, using one of the available guides.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
I do not know what the username and password is to log into my DBOX2. Could it be trader locked or changed by the previous user?

    LIAM SAYS:
The DBOX2 uses a standard Linux FTP server titled ?VSFTPD?. It is a classic package that comes bundled with many other linux distributions available for the PC. VSFTPD uses the built-in Linux users list to associate usernames and passwords. It is started via INETD, a standard linux component.

The DBOX2 comes with only 1 default user account ? ?root?. As long as you know the root password then you can gain access to the entire box. User passwords on Linux are normally changed by issuing the ?passwd? command on the shell. However, this functionality does not seem to work on the DBOX no matter how hard you try (perhaps intentional?).

A ?trader? in our sense is generally somebody who is considered to be making excessive money from information freely available within the public domain. Most of these ?traders? have very little (if any) technical knowledge of how the system works, and are therefore not smart enough to understand how the FTP daemon works or how to change the root password.

Considering that the passwd command does not work on the DBOX2, the only option we are left with is to manually assign users via VSFTPD?s user list, which can be a complex task. The only feasible way to disable FTP access is to either kill the FTPd or not start it at all. Again, most traders do not have the knowledge to do this, or simply cannot be bothered.

It is possible to remove the standard FTP daemon and replace it with a different one. This has to be done from source code, since we need to specifically compile our code to run on the DBOX2. Compiling a new FTPd requires Linux and knowledge of how makefiles and cross-compilers work. Only a new FTPd which is specifically compiled for the DBOX2 would be able to accept alternate usernames and passwords.

It is therefore very unlikely that the username/password to login via FTP has been changed.
Below is a list of usernames and passwords than work on the DBOX2:

    Pre-2005 Images ? username = root, password = dbox
    Post-2005 Images ? username = root, password = dbox2
    Pre-Feb2006 Images ? username = root, password = (blank)

When a password is blank, ANY value can be entered and you will still have the ability to log in. If after consulting the above list of passwords you still cannot log in then you more than likely have a network or connectivity problem, and the username/password is not an issue.

    QUESTION:
    1. What is this DBOX Command Center and where can I obtain it?
    2. When I start DBOX Command Center I receive error messages?

    LIAM SAYS:
I originally made the DBOX Command Center program to simply the transfer of images and service files between the box and your PC. The program is designed for beginners, and was written in less than an hour from bodged code. It was buggy, and had a few transfer faults. Support for DBOX Command Center ended when I released the newer version entitled ?EasyDBOX 123?. I am still receiving around 5 email requests a day for information regarding DBOX Command Center ? please consider the program obsolete, with no further support available from the author.

If you have somehow managed to obtain the DBOX Command Center program and still want to use it despite the above warnings, then you are free to do so. However, you should not post questions related to the program onto the forums ? please try another method of accessing your DBOX. If you receive error messages about runtime dependencies then please download and run this file: Hidden Content

The above file will install all the support needed to run the DBOX Command Center software without error messages. It will not however prevent the program from crashing, and will not fix its internal errors. The libraryfiles.exe file will only resolve issues related to the starting up of the program itself.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
I have a Cable DBOX2 but no matter which image I try, I always get scanning settings for a Satellite DBOX. What is wrong?

    LIAM SAYS:
99.9% of all DBOX images support both cable AND satellite tuners. The more recent DBOX2 images are realistically more geared towards satellite, as there are very few ?open access? cable providers left. The default settings for scanning are always set to Satellite, but are changed to ?cable? when a cable tuner has been detected within the box.

If you have the cable version of the DBOX2 but are still continually receiving settings for satellite scanning then you are likely to have a faulty or tempermental tuner. You can confirm this by recording a ?boot log? (obtainable via a null modem cable) and checking its contents to locate errors relating to ?frontend? and ?frontend timeouts?.

If you discover that your box will occasionally work after being switched on for a while then you may have a dry solder joint. You can try reflowing the solder points to create a better electrical connection, although this rarely works in a case such as this.

    QUESTION:
I need to return my DBOX2 due to a fault, but the seller states in his ?Terms and Conditions? that the box must be flashed with the original image or must be in a blank state. How can I achieve this?

    LIAM SAYS:
Firstly you should check the original website or description for details that relate to the original image that would have been flashed to the box. The common image is ?Sportster PRO UK Mod?, but there are many sellers that are shipping their boxes with ?Yadi? images. For best results, check the description to identify which image was originally installed, and then locate that image at Hidden Content .

You may also want to look out for my upcoming image, which is deliberately BLANK and created primarily for use in returning DBOX2s in a legal state ? watch this space.

    QUESTION:
I've just heard of this 'Panic Button'. What does it do and where can I obtain it?

    LIAM SAYS:
The 'Panic Button' originally started in an image that I created called 'Oxygen' (which has now been destroyed and is no longer available). It was then followed in a D!g!talWor|dz image, and finally followed up by the Commando Team. The panic button is essentially a small program that wipes the box of all evidence of illegal TV viewing, and you generally access it from the plugins menu within your image.

A hot-swappable version will be created soon that can be used in all images. Renwich has made a start with his 'Panic Button in 3 presses', but I am improving on this Hidden Content

The Panic Button is a great addition for those of you that are a little too paranoid after being caught. If you were to ever have your house raided and you were watching TV, then a quick button press could immediately remove all evidence of illegal viewing on your DBOX.

The panic button (my version anyway) automatically performs the following functions:

    1. Kills neutrino so that there is no userinterface.
    2. Kills all softcams so that no premium channels are decoded.
    3. Removes the 'panic button' option from the plugins menu.
    4. Erases the contents of /var/keys
    5. Erases the contents of /var/scce.
    6. Replaces your services.xml with a list of non-working FTA channels.
    7. Restart neutrino, with no evidence remaining.

The entire process takes around 2 seconds in total to complete - those 2 seconds could save your life (or a nice hefty fine at least). I am trying to urge more UK developers to include the plugin in their images, as I think it is a nice added extra to have. You can currently get the functionality of the panic button is Commando v4 and Commando v5, available from this site.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
All the images on this site seem to be in four parts. How do you flash these to the box?

    LIAM SAYS:
Images on this site are uploaded in either 3 or 4 parts, depending on their size. This is mainly due to server upload limitations and the fact that it is generally more convenient for the original poster. You should download all parts to your desktop, and then open the first part. Providing that WinRAR is installed you will be able to extract the final image, which will be one single file ? this is the file that you should flash to your box. After extracting the actual image you may discard the parts that you downloaded, so that you are left with the final product only.

WinRAR can be downloaded from Hidden Content ? it is a shareware program but will work on a ?freeware? basis providing you can put up with the nag screen that appears each time the program is started.

Re: "Liam Says" Mega-Thread (PLZ DO NOT POST)

    QUESTION:
Which is the best image for my box?

    LIAM SAYS:
This is probably the most commonly asked question and it always has the same basic answer %u2013 there isn%u2019t a best image for your box. Due to the extreme differences between one receiver and another, you will rarely find an image that works perfectly on more than one box. Each box has its uniqueness, and this is what confuses most people.

Consider some of the hardware differences:
    1. There are three manufacturers of the DBOX2 %u2013 Nokia, Sagem and Phillips.
    2. Each manufacturer has their own design of motherboard.
    3. Each motherboard has at least 3 different versions, depending on the year of manufacture.
    4. There are two main types of chipset %u2013 AvIA 500, and AvIA 600.
    5. There is a GTX and an ENX.
    6. Each manufacturer has their own design of power supply.
    7. Each power supply has at least 2 different versions, depending on the year of manufacture.
    8. Boxes wear %u2013 some boxes have previously been used more than others.
    9. Due to wear, certain components may be weaker than others.
    10. Boxes may have been opened by previous owner, interrupting air flow.
    11. Some users may have opted to remove the internal modem, whilst others choose not to.
    12. Each person has their own use for a box %u2013 some may like streaming, others recording, etc.
    13. Each person has a different cable feed, with different signal readings.
    14. Storage locations of the actual box vary by user, affecting air flow.

As the conditions vary greatly, no one single person can recommend a particular image for your particular purpose. Each image is built from CVS files, and the CVS components change daily, sometimes hourly. It is down to YOU to determine which image is best for your needs. You can decide this by testing a batch of images and playing with them for a while until you find the one that works the best.

You may find that you like one image for watching TV, but like another image for recording or streaming purposes. Unfortunately it is very rare that you will come across an image that will perform every function that you desire without errors or problems.
