    mobile phone scam.

    Has this happened to anyone?
A couple of weeks ago. I received a text message offering me wallpapers and ringtones and then said. "to stop these messages text STOP to this number.
Obviously I ignored the message but then when my mobile phone bill came in I was charged 75p + vat for recieving this message. I called my mobile operator up to complain about this and ask how to stop it. He informed me that the only way to stop it was to send STOP back to them, So I asked him what was to stop them giving this number to someone else to do the same? or even for them to send me more messages from other numbers and he could not give me any assurances that I am able to stop this happening.
Does anyone know of a way to prevent this happening?

    Re: mobile phone scam.

I only give my number to friends and family. That way the only people with my mobile number are people I know and the mobile phone company.

Also always check the data protection decleration on forms and applications (on- and off-line). Some are auto opt-in some are auto opt-out so read carefully. If there is no data protection check box it is assumed that details will not be shared, however I will only provide minimum details in these cases. If an online form gives you an error for not putting in a phone number just type in '01000000000'

To complain about a premium rate services (text or phone) contact Icstis via freephone 0800 500 121 or online Hidden Content .

    To complain about other numbers (087, 084, 07, or 0800) contact Ofcom on 0845 456 3000.

Regisiter your mobile, land line, home address and email with tps (lo-call 0845 070 0707 or Hidden Content ) to reduce the amount of cold calls, junk mail and spam (NB only works with UK originating calls/mail).

    Re: mobile phone scam.

I use boltblue to send my text messages on because im a miserable git and I seen a message on their site for a free wallpaper or ringtone so being a miserable git I clicked it and gave my phone number and now they keep sending me messages trying to charge me for stuff every day, luckly its not a phone I use anymore or top but they were trying to send me the stuff a couple of times a day at ?1:50 a go.
