    Asbestos

remember guys, when doing construction work or major renovation that asbestos can be disturbed,

***(Please note this is just a brief guide, more information is available from the HSE website)***

common places for asbestos at home is:-

    Outside
Cement Garage Roof - (or within the bitumen if it's a old garage thats felted)
roof tiles - (these tiles are usually a lot thicker than slate tiles)
cement drain pipe - (especially if its old)
Soffit board - (can be cement or insulation board)

    Inside
Textured coating - (Artex) can be in anyroom on the ceiling
Floor Tiles - (can be in the bitumen or within the floor tile matrix or both places, these tiles are usually smaller squared but thicker)
insualting board - (anywhere in the home, if you shine a torch on it and see shiney speckles thats a new board which is safe, but it it's greyish and does not shine then possibly asbestos)
toilet Cistern - usually black and not plastic

    Treatment
if in doubt and you think it's asbestos your best bet is to PAINT IT,

I work at a asbestos consultancy any more info let me know or if you want a material testing for potential asbestos again let me know and i'll have that arranged for you.

    Re: Asbestos

    just a quickie on that
as an ex asbestos stripper if you feel you must remove it then soak it with a hose as your removing it as it,s the airbourne particles that causes the damage
    in most cases
garage roof,s and tiles are brown (quite hard wearing)
lagging is mainly white ( breaks up like flour)
and blue mainly used for industrial and gurders(usualy sprayed on)
and the order of deadlieness is brown, white and blue being the worst

Remember its not the size of it that gets you
it's the shape of the particles

    Be safe
    Always call an Expert
(it's cheeper than the fine Hidden Content )

or if your more of a techie

The two main groups that asbestos is known as
Serpentine. (Chrysotile) Mineral or rock consisting mainly of the hydrous silicate of magnesia.

Amphibole. A group of minerals with similar crystal structures containing a silicate chain and combinations of chiefly sodium, calcium, iron and aluminium.

The most common types of these asbestos minerals are known as
    Chrysotile (White Asbestos)
    Amosite (Brown Asbestos)
    Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos)

    have fun

remember to wet the corrigated sheetings, try not to break it but screw out the screws and remove whole sheets at a time, breaking the cement corrigated sheeting may release fibers mainly white asbestos (and possibly blue asbestos depending where it was manufactured) asbestos cement contains significant amount of asbestos thats around 30%. white asbestos can be damped down with water (it's Hydrophilic) where as blue asbestos can not (it's Hydrophobic)which would need additived added to your water to stick to the blue fibres.
Most inportantly make sure you remove whole sheetings and dont break them also when removed try to double bag them and seal the bag with tape.
