Call of Duty Black Ops 3 review

How many times can Activision pull off the same trick before it gets old? Quite a few it would seem, as the Call of Duty juggernaut shows little sign of slowing. Last year's Advanced Warfare was at least a small evolution of the concept, pushing the narrative into the future and giving the designers the excuse to use fanciful gear like exo-armour and massive and hoverbikes, and this year's offering sticks with roughly the same time period, introducing its own tricks to keep things fresh.

The big news this time around is cybernetic augmentations. As is explained in the single-player mode's rather harrowing opening mission, soldiers can now be fused with robotic upgrades to greatly enhance their combat potential - and to fend off the attentions of a new breed of robotic soldier which feels no pain and shows no compassion. In addition to the ability to wall-run and super-jump, you can use your neural upgrades to track enemies using the tactical view, or even disable robot adversaries using a kind of EMP-based blast of energy. As you can imagine, such features are a big departure from the normal Call of Duty experience - at times it feels like you're playing an RPG with magic users and spellcasters - but they're fun and make sense within the context of the new setting.

Visually, there's little that can touch this game on next-gen hardware right now. The character models are scarily realistic, with Hollywood actor Christopher Meloni (Man of Steel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) getting a lot of screen-time. During the narrative sequences - which are rendered using the game engine - it's often hard to believe what you're viewing isn't real, such is the level of detail. In the game, the action is rock-solid and smooth, a testament to the deep pockets of Activision and the commercial importance of the franchise.

The player's status as a cybernetically-enhanced supersoldier has an impact on the flow of the gameplay in both single and multiplayer. The ability to wall-run and boost your way around the environment makes it feel a little bit like the on-foot sections of Titanfall, and gives the game a kinetic feel which has been all but absent from previous offerings. As a result, Black Ops 3 feels fresh and exciting in ways that more recent Call of Duty outings haven't, and to add even more variety to the package there's a special Zombies mode which is set in the 1940s and has its own self-contained plot.

It's tempting to accuse Activation of milking Call of Duty for all it is worth, but this year you cannot accuse the publisher - and developer Infinity Ward - of being lazy or lackadaisical. Sure, the same familiar tropes are rolled out here - linear progression, dumb dialogue, big explosions - but the subtle changes made to how the game works really do improve things, and when you're done with the better-than-average solo campaign, the multiplayer and Zombies modes should keep you glued to your pad for the next 12 months.
