Ladies and gents, it?s official: the Oculus Rift will go on sale in the first quarter of 2016. Oculus VR made the announcement in a blog post.

It hasn?t said exactly when in the first three months you can pick up yours, but you'll be able to pre-order before the end of this year. It also sounds like it's made some improvements since the last prototype we saw.

"The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as updated ergonomics for a more natural fit, and a highly refined industrial design," the firm said.

It will announce more info, including hardware, software, input and its unannounced made-for-VR games and experiences "in the weeks ahead".

Oculus CEO Palmer Luckey previously said the device would go on sale in 2015, unless something went horribly wrong. That was before his company was bought by Facebook. While many felt betrayed that such a plucky start-up could be enfolded into the Mark Zuckerberg bosom, Luckey said it would give the device far more abilities. Though that also meant the firm couldn't hit its original deadline.

The virtual reality headset debuted on Kickstarter back in 2012 and raised just under $2.5 million. It's caused waves in the gaming world, and spawned a host of imitators including PlayStation's Project Morpheus and the HTC Vive. We can't wait for it.
