if the virgin problem isn't fixed then thunderbird wont work, looks like there's a problem with the blueyonder server.

try changing your server to :-

    Incoming Mail Server = pop3.virginmedia.com

    Outgoing Mail Server = smtp.virginmedia.com

make sure all these settings are in place along with the above :-

My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication: enabled
Use same settings as my incoming mail server: enabled

    Advanced tab

    Incoming server (POP3): 995
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) enabled
    Outgoing server (SMTP): 465
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) enabled

My mums account had the same issue with her virginmedia email on wlm. i just removed the account and resetup the details.

You could try doing that first.

Next you could use the thunderbird backup tool to save everything then uninstal thunderbird then reinstall> then use the thunderbird backup tool to restore everything.

ok got this sorted now and heres how the server was not responding correctly on the default port. i had to set the outgoing server to:

    Description: Irrelevant
    Server Name: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
    Port: 25
    Connection security: STARTTLS
    Authentication method: Normal password
    logon name ...whatever it is
