Amazon has been rumored to be working on a smartphone since the latter half of 2013. The earlier rumors indicated that the retail giant was looking to collaborate with beleaguered handset vendor HTC in launching a mobile device. However, it was later found that Amazon will be looking to manufacture a device on its own.

One of the main differentiating points on Amazon?s smartphone is said to be the inclusion of six cameras, four of which will be used in conjunction with sensors to create a hardware assisted 3D tilt effect. There hasn?t been any information as to how this will be achieved, but the device is said to feature a unique gesture-based navigation system thanks to the bevy of sensors and cameras.

As for the design of the device, the first leaked render shows that Amazon?s smartphone takes a lot of visual cues from other devices already existent in the market. This device will be the first of many that Amazon is looking to launch. Instead of bundling in the latest hardware available, Amazon is looking to a strong digital content medium as well as a new navigation system to drive sales of the handset. The device itself is said to feature a 4.7-inch 720p screen, a Snapdragon quad-core CPU, 2 GB RAM and a forked version of Android that is similar to the variant Amazon uses on its Kindle line of tablets.

Amazon is rumored to launch its first mobile device sometime next quarter.
