Spring is here Hidden Content
Snow is likely to be making headlines again during the coming days, with blizzard conditions and some significant falls expected across a large swathe of the country.

The reason for the snow risk is low pressure to the southwest of the UK, pushing fronts up across the country - it's already raining in the SW, where rainfall totals will be a concern, and it's as this pushes northeast and meets the colder air it'll start to fall as snow.

The focus for significant snow from later today, through Friday and into Saturday from the midlands northward, north Wales, northern England (particularly the Pennines west), Northern Ireland and southern Scotland. Accumulations of 5-15cm are likely at lower levels, with potentially a lot more over the hills. Eventually the snow will clear during Saturday but by that point East Anglia and perhaps southern England could be getting in on the act too.

There is some uncertainty over the northern extent of the snow, and at lower levels - particularly close to coasts it may well be rain and sleet rather than snow, but coupled with very strong winds bringing blizzard conditions to the snow affected areas it's going to be a really nasty spell of weather with disruption very likely.

Heading back to the southwest, rain totals of 25-50mm with more over higher ground will also cause some issues, with the rain slowly clearing to showers during tomorrow, and to the north of the persistent snow zone there's a continuing feed of snow showers affecting eastern Scotland throughout the next few days, with further accumulations likely here.

Eventually by Sunday things will have calmed down in the main, with just a scattering of snow showers about by this stage - particularly in eastern regions. It will still be cold though, so ice will be an additional hazard, and the cold weather will stay with us right into next week..
