    Underlay or building paper???

I'm going to fit a hardwood floor and I've been told I need to put building paper down onto my existing floorboards before I nail the new planks. However the shop selling the flooring is saying that I have to buy underlay to go between instead of paper. Anyone have a strong opinion on this. Question is, are they taking advantage, or is it really necessary

from the last floor i did i used foam based underlay. you can use paper if your floorboards are very level. if they are not you will find that some of your lam will start to lift and bow. sanding the boards flat is costly and time consuming so i would use foam underlay. hope this helps mate.

Your probably best off using the foam based underlayer, that is what is recommended with the gaurantee

You say "before you nail down your new planks" if true i can't imagine that being a laminate. Provided you lay perpedicular to the flooring underneath i can't imagine what good either building paper or underlay will achieve.

Building paper. The underlay is to stop the hollow sound you get with laminates and give it some insulation. Not needed with hardwood.

    Re: Underlay or building paper???

id use a foam underlay with a wax paper on top.

Reasons being underlay will help insulate and cut down on noise levels. the wax paper on top helps the boars slide together to get that perfect fit without little gaps or joines you can see!! PS i made the dancefloor for BBC1'S come dancing and still do all the repair work on it to this day.
