How to stop fresh cut logs drying and splitting

A friend had a tree cut down a few weeks ago, he was kind enough to donate some logs (about three foot in height) to my future garden project. the trouble is the logs are drying and cracking in the heat - some of them have split and are now only useful as fire wood. They are stored outside - no choice in that. What can i do to stop this? I was thinking that maybe they're just drying too quickly??

The simple way to prevent the logs splitting is to paint the ends.

mouleetfrite is right this will help but in order to stop splitting completely on substancial trunks you do need to sloww the drying process keep undercover & well ventilated in order that any moisture can escape. I hope you won't need the logs for about two year cos thats how long it will take without a dehumidifying kiln!!!
