A scary story or M$ orwellian future?

Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1
A similar (but much more capable) spyware component will be included in Hidden Content . It will not only employ better scanning algorithms, it will do more than just scan for "terrorism-related" materials. The scanner can be programmed via Windows Defender updates to scan for any "subject of interest". Amongst the subjects of interest mentioned were :

    • illegal pornography
    • illegally downloaded media (music and videos)
    • illegally downloaded software
    • stolen intellectual property

It will also include a remote access capability for "authorised personnel" - a backdoor, in security parlance. If Internet connectivity is unreliable, the scanner can be instructed to compress and upload files of interest whenever Internet connectivity is available.
The Service Pack 1 spyware component is not expected to be activated immediately on installation. Instead, this will be a new revenue stream for Microsoft, as the scanning capability and even remote access will be offered to "qualified authorities". It is not mentioned how much these "qualified authorities" are expected to pay, but you can be sure it won't be peanuts!
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows XP, you would be foolish to think it won't affect you. The document also states that similar updates for Windows Vista and Windows XP are being prepared. Yes, Microsoft's spyware is coming to an update near you!

What is bothering me is the fact that if you buy a brand new Ferrari you dont leave the keys in the ignition and leave it in the street do you?? Its the same with DVDs, Games ect the people that make these games are just interested in how much money they are getting instead of thinking hang on a min we have to make sure that no one can copy this as it is ours so we have to think about new copy protection!! Oh no they dont think that they have left it and think that they can leave it to the police, trading standards ect to go after the people that are downloading them and copying them! It just seems to me that instead of moaning that people are downloading them and burning them they should be getting new copy protection in place to keep there investment better instead of spying on people and saying oh you come here you downloaded such and such!!

I wonder if we will be able to block downloading the SP1 patch?
As far as I'm concerned Win 7 doesn't need an SP1 anyway, so the disadvantages outweigh any advantages for the end user! Hidden Content
Why do they make decent software, then when it works right, intentionally balls it up? Hidden Content
Surely this is as illegal as forcibly including IE in their OS's?

There is a strong argument that this is an April Fools, not least the forums of the site that originally broke the "story": Hidden Content

Re: A scary story or M$ orwellian future?

The one website that you can be sure to have picked this up, if confirmed, is The Register. Yet nothing like the story told on the Tech ARP website comes up on a search for Windows 7 heuristic, Windows 7 authorised personnel, Windows 7 terrorism related or Windows 7 backdoor on searches. Even bit-tech.net, who tend to pick up stories from several other tech sites, don't have an article.

Looking at the first few pages of google; the results are either the Tech ARP website, or forums discussing that blog entry. Some of the forums mention the April 1st publish date, others make note of the Tech ARP forum discussion that suggests (decides?) it's an April Fool joke.

Until a tech' news site picks up the story, I'll stay on the Hidden Content side of the fence...

If it is an April fools "joke", I don't think it is funny at all and is just scare mongering! Hidden Content
I really wish some of the stupid barstewards who start rumours like this, would learn to use their brains, attached to a bit of common sense, before they learned to use a computer! Hidden Content
