Wednesday 17-Sep-2008 9:59 AM Japan-specific update released, but you can download it if you want

Sony has released PS3 firmware version 2.43, but your PS3 won't have told you that like it normally does.

That's apparently because the update is only mandatory in Japan. But if, for whatever reason, you get a kick out of installing new firmware, you can do that.

"If you manually initiate a firmware update by clicking on 'System Update' under the XMB's Settings icon, the v2.43 update will be available, regardless of where you are located," says Sony.

"Users outside of Japan do not need to perform this update if your PS3 system software is on version v2.41 or later. However if you do perform the update, it will not cause any issues with your system or add any new functionality."

What the update does for the Japanese is a mystery though.
