I agree with the temp control irons. Stay away from the butane powered irons unless your onsite or away from a socket, they arent very precise and can burn vital components from the jet vent if your not too careful.

Re: Good Soling Iron
15-18w Antec irons work well, depends what you're doing though - smaller stuff wants a narrow tip & lower power whereas a big join needs more heat & larger tip.

Re: Good Soling Iron
it depends what you want it for. personally i've never needed to solder chips to pcb's so my cheap gas soldering iron works a treat.

Re: Good Soldering Iron
most of the cheap 1's from maplins the tips go after a while, usually last me about 6-8 months or so, its cheaper to buy a new iron than new tips Hidden Content

Weller definately seem to be one of the better makes.

Bought my temp controlled soldering iron from Maplins about 3-4 years back for ?30 I think... still going strong. One issue though... I couldn't get fine tips for this iron. If you're looking to do some really fine/tricky soldering, I'd suggest going for something else. For most day-to-day stuff, this works swell. The Antec ones someone mentioned from Maplins are also great.
I had a Weller Microtip 12v soldering iron... but once the tip was worn out, I couldn't find a replacement... had to trash the iron. ?20 down the drain.
I'd suggest that when you invest/buy a soldering iron, make sure that it has spare tips available easily. Or buy a cheap one which you won't regret chucking in the bin if the tip's gone.
Best regards,

Re: Good Soldering Iron
I would go with a weller for bench use , and also a gas filled portable iron for more larger components for more heat .
