5v Power rail in a laptop? where?

The problem;

i have a laptop which the system fan keeps cutting out. the fan kicks in when i power up the laptop but goes off after about 10 seconds and doesnt kick in again, this is obviously causing it to overheat, hang and crash. i then decided to power the fan from a seperate source to ensure the machine wasnt damaged due to the overheating ect; it ran fine for hours, so i concluded that i was definately the fan stopping that was causing the lockups.

Now to my question:

Does anyone know of a 5v component in a laptop that i could steal power from (Thought of the battery with resistors but the fan needs to go off with the laptop) I know the hard disk is 5v but i dont know which of the pins are voltage and would it affect the performance of the hard disk if 500ma is being pulled from it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
