Preseason, does it matter?

I'm a liverpool fan and we recently got hammered 5-0 in a preseason friendly with Mainz. Gut feeling is oh my god, this does not bode well for our confidence going into champions league game next week. What is Rafa playing at? Any thoughts? especially those from Cheski fans with Cole ruled out til pos Xmas, and Carrick ruled out for the Mancs all in nothing preseasons.
