Ebay Scam I thought I would share this scam that I was nearly caught out with on ebay.
I was selling a leather coat and bidding was pretty low. I had a reserve of £50.00 but bidding was only up to c£20.00. Then, at the eleventh hour there was a bid for £50.00. The prospective buyer was based in France and when I looked at his ebay history he had only set up the account that day. Anyway, the buyer then emails to confirm he is the highest bidder and then offers a further £30.00 for postage as he wanted it sending to Nigeria!!
Within an hour I received an email that appeared to be from Paypal advising that payment had been made and that they were holding the funds but would not release until I could provide evidence that the item had been posted i.e. a postage reference. I replied to the email from 'paypal' and even provide a fake reference to see what happened. The replies from 'paypal' were repetitive asking for the posting reference. By coincidence, the prospective buyer closed his account with ebay within days of the bid and the replies from 'paypal' eventually stopped. Obviously I did not release the goods but the scam was convincing, so beware.
