Toshiba today of delay in UK launch of HDE1 as follows:
Dear Toshiba Dealer
It is with great regret that I am writing to inform you of an unexpected delay to the shipment of our HD DVD players for the European marker.
During the final production testing of the HD-E1 model HD DVD players this month. Toshiba engineers identified an issue with a certain component. This issue, although relatively minor, could affect the playback quality of certain HD DVD software titles.
The problem has been identified and is relatively easily addressable. However, Toshiba's commitment to delivering the highest quality players possible means that none of the units manufactured to date can be passed on to retail before the component issue is rectified and this has inevitably forced us to revise our delivery schedules.
Despite this regrettable delay, Toshiba still expects to start production of the HD-E1 in December 2006, with a view to delivering units to the market in late 2006/early 2007. Changes to the production schedule for the HD-E1 will, however, have a knock-on effect to the manufacturing schedule for the HD-XE1 unit, which is now expected to ship in January of 2007.
I appreciate that this news will be extremely disappointing for you, just as it is for us. The component issue was wholly unexpected and has only come to light in the very final round of product testing. I can only offer my sincere apologies for both the delay to manufacturing and the timing of my delivery of this information to you.
Please be assured that Toshiba is doing everything it can to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. I hope that you understand this difficult situation and will continue to support and co-operate with us.
