The deal is one of the first practical benefits from the recent merger of the two firms, which have 30 million customers combined.

The network sharing deal is limited to 2G signals, meaning that customers will see little benefit when using the mobile web.

Analysts said that T-Mobile had the most to gain from the merger.

"Outside of the South-East [of England] there has been a constant perception that T-Mobile is an underperforming network," said Shaun Collins of research firm CCS Insight.


"This literally takes it away overnight."
Network evolution

He said that network coverage was becoming a "key battleground" between the major UK networks.

"The network coverage advantages of the merger [between Orange and T-Mobile] were always the most important part of it," he said.

Customers of the two firms will have to sign up for the free "roaming" service, which goes live on 5 October.

Once registered, their phone will automatically hop between the networks when it loses signal. The underlying system is similar to that used when a phone "roams" on a different network abroad.

Next year Everything Everywhere - the company that runs Orange and T-Mobile in the UK - said that phones would automatically switch to whichever of the two networks has the strongest signal mid-call.

It said it also plans to roll it out to 3G services.

When it does, Orange customers will be able to use a 3G network owned and operated by Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), a joint venture company owned by Three and T-Mobile.

Orange joined MBNL on the 16 August.

"Everything Everywhere will be adding Orange sites to the network it shares with Three in the course of time, and Three customers will get access to a significant proportion of those as they are added," said a spokesperson for Everything Everywhere.

Three customers are already able to use the Orange network for 2G calls and texts.

Further down the line, Everything Everywhere aims to start building a next-generation LTE (long-term evolution) mobile network, to cope with the surge in demand for data and the mobile web.

LTE offers faster speeds than current 3G networks and is able to handle more traffic.

The UK government plans to hold an auction of spectrum for next generation services in 2011.

Tomizawa hit his head on the track as his bike flipped over


Shoya Tomizawa lost control of his bike and was struck by Alex de Angelis and British rider Scott Redding at full speed during the race.
Video footage showed Tomizawa hitting his head on the track as his bike flipped over before the collision.
Tomizawa, who rode for the Technomag-CIP team, was treated by medics at the circuit.



Officials are reported to have stumbled as they carried Tomizawa from the track


Earlier reports from the AFP news agency said the rider was propelled over 40 metres and off the track into the gravel.
Tomizawa is reported to have already been in a coma as he was rushed by ambulance to the Riccione hospital on the Adriatic coast.
Efforts to save him failed and he passed away at 2.20pm local time (13.20 BST).
A statement on the MotoGP website said Tomizawa died of "subsequent cranial, thoracic and abdominal trauma".



The Japanese rider enjoyed a stunning start to the 2010 season


"Everybody involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Shoya's family and friends at this tragic loss," it added.
Despite Tomizawa's death, the races continued even though some riders were reluctant to compete.
"I saw the incident on the TV monitor and I could see that it was serious - but not that serious," MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi said.

​A MUM-OF-TWO befriended men on Facebook posing as a glamour model as part of a blackmail plot.
Katrina Ward, 31, told two men she was a glamour model called Jada Harris and sent them saucy messages.
It was in a bid to get them to send her naked pictures of themselves and film themselves taking part in sex acts.
Ward, of Malvern Road, west Hull, also falsely asked for money for deposits on fake properties from both men.

They both handed over the money, despite not having met her.
Once she had the pictures and videos her accomplice, Michael Willingham, 22, used the images to try to threaten and extort money from the men.
He pretended that “Jada” was his 15-year-old daughter and he would take the videos to the police unless the men paid him £1,250.
On another occasion her friend Victoria Bucknall collected the money from one of the victims.
The plot came to light after one victim went to police and showed officers the blackmail messages he was being sent.
Ward pleaded guilty at Hull Crown Court to theft on April 8 for stealing £400 from one man.
Bucknall pleaded guilty to money laundering by collecting the money.
She had met the man in the Home Farm pub car park in Willerby to collect the money. Ward had also asked a second man to give her £100, but has not been charged with this.
Willingham, of Sunny Bank, west Hull, has pleaded guilty to blackmail.
His barrister Paul Genney said: “He has pleaded guilty to blackmail and blames himself entirely.”
Recorder Abdul Iqbal has adjourned the case for probation reports but has warned the defendants they could be jailed.
He said: “By adjourning the case I give no indication for sentence.
“All sentencing options remain open, including a custodial sentence.”
Ward, a driver for Andrew Page in Roper Street, Hull city centre, had used the alias to ask the men to accept her as a friend on social networking site Facebook in May last year.
She then sent them messages and got their phone numbers and began sending them explicit messages.
The deception only ended in April when the police raided the homes of the people involved and seized their computers.
They are due to be sentenced later this month.
