This member is the original thread starter. Angry The Lifeboatmen get no government support either!

I Have just been reading a report in an online edition of my home paper which reported a huge bequest by a lady who died and left her estate to the R.N.L.I to buy a new boat. They were very grateful and the new boat was being tested to take up station around Cumbria. Why this lady left everything to them is a mystery as she apparently had no previous ties to them.
What made me think was a comment at the end of the article which said; "
The RNLI costs about £335,000 every day and relies on voluntary contributions and legacies as it receives no government funding."
Why?
Considering the vital work they do, in all weathers and dangerous conditions, I think it's disgusting that these brave people receive no government funding. They are all volunteers as it is, so any help should be given to keep them safe while saving other peoples lives. They are the Fire Brigade and Ambulance men of our coasts and should be officially supported. A recent "Tonight" program highlighted the state of repair of of some of the ancient Air Sea Rescue helicopters as well, which was pretty grim.
We can waste so much money in Afghanistan and other places, but can't afford to support our own vital home services. Any of them! The government obviously thinks it's much cheaper to let people die here than to try to prevent it?
There is something seriously wrong with the mentality of this countries leaders, whichever party they belong to. I am aware that the R.N.L.I has always been a charity, but as a seafaring nation and an island, it shouldn't need to be.
What do you think?
